Chapter 7 - Whispers in the SyndicateTwo weeks passed in the serene quiet of the Lake Geneva estate. For Adrian Vale, the transition from an isolated warlord to something resembling a father figure was jarring, yet strangely grounding.

However, in the underworld of Chicago, a vacuum of power never remained empty for long.
Back in the city, Daniel Mercer sat in the back of a black Mercedes parked outside an upscale steakhouse on Michigan Avenue, reviewing encrypted intelligence reports on his laptop. The screen flashed red: External threat detected.
"Boss," Daniel spoke into his encrypted comm-piece, direct to the Lake Geneva estate. "We have a complication."
Across the secure line, the deep, steady voice of Adrian Vale replied, "Talk."
"It's not the Morans," Daniel said, his voice tightening. "Word has leaked out that you've retreated to the Wisconsin estate and that your focus has... shifted. The Italian syndicate out of New York—the Rossi family—is moving assets into the South Side. They think you're vulnerable."
In the grand library of the Lake Geneva estate, Adrian stood by the window, watching Lily chase a small golden retriever puppy across the snow-dusted lawn outside.
"Vulnerable," Adrian repeated, a dangerous edge returning to his voice.
"They're planning a direct strike on our primary financial accounts downtown tonight," Daniel continued. "And boss... they know about the maid and the kid."
Adrian's grip on his smartphone tightened so hard the plastic casing creaked.
"They know?"
"A disgruntled captain from the Moran remnant sold the information," Daniel admitted grimly. "They think taking the child is leverage to force you to surrender your entire territory."
The silence on the line lasted for three agonizing seconds. When Adrian spoke, his voice dropped into a register of pure, unadulterated ice.
"Get the jet warmed up, Daniel."
"Boss, you're coming back to the city?"
"No," Adrian said coldly. "I'm staying right here to protect what is mine. You and the strike team are going to show the Rossi family what happens when you knock on a sleeping wolf's den."
"Understood," Daniel replied. "Consider it done."
Adrian ended the call and turned away from the window.
Behind him, Claire stood in the doorway of the library. She had heard enough of the conversation to turn her face completely pale. Her hands gripped the doorframe for support.
"They're coming for us, aren't they?" Claire whispered, her voice trembling.
Adrian walked toward her, his steps slow and deliberate, stopping just a foot away. He looked down into her frightened, beautiful eyes, seeing the raw terror that he had spent a lifetime inflicting on others—and realizing, with sudden clarity, how much he hated seeing it on her face.
"They won't get within a mile of this estate, Claire," Adrian promised, his voice low, steady, and absolute. "I built an empire on violence to keep the world out. But for you and Lily... I'll burn their entire syndicate to ash before I let anyone lay a finger on you."
Claire looked up at him, reading the lethal, unyielding promise in his slate-gray eyes. In that moment, she didn't see a crime boss. She saw a protector.
"Be careful, Adrian," she whispered, reaching out to touch his sleeve.

It was the first time she had ever used his first name.
Adrian looked down at her hand on his cuff, a subtle warmth washing over him that he hadn't felt since the day the world went dark three years ago.
