Chapter 10 - The New Empire and the Unexpected TwistSix months later, the Chicago skyline looked entirely different from the executive suites of the Vale Tower.

The syndicate wars were a distant memory. Under Adrian Vale’s restructured leadership, the organization had transitioned entirely out of violent street crime and into legitimate real estate, shipping, and philanthropic foundations. The Chicago underworld had learned a permanent lesson: you do not disturb the peace of the man who found his soul in a little girl's laughter.
Inside the sprawling penthouse on the top floor of the Vale Tower, the atmosphere was filled with warmth, light, and the sound of soft laughter.
The double doors to the private study opened.
Adrian walked out wearing a tailored navy suit, but his tie was loosened, and he was carrying a wooden picture book in one hand.
In the center of the expansive living room, a three-year-old girl with honey-blond curls was running around in a white flower-girl dress, clutching a stuffed rabbit with one crooked ear.
"Uncle Adrian!" Lily squealed, running toward him at full speed.
Adrian knelt down with a genuine, warm smile—a smile that the old crime bosses of Chicago would never have believed possible—and scooped her up into his arms, tossing her gently into the air as she giggled delightedly.
From the kitchen archway, Claire walked out carrying a tray of pastries. She was wearing a stunning emerald-green dress, her hair pinned back in an elegant twist, her face radiant with a happiness she hadn't known was possible.
Adrian set Lily down gently, watching her run off toward the balcony where a white cat—Snowball—was napping lazily in the afternoon sun.
He walked over to Claire, stopping just inches away. He reached out, gently taking the tray from her hands and setting it on a nearby table. Then, his hands cupped her face, his thumbs gently brushing her cheekbones.
"You look stunning," Adrian whispered.
Claire smiled, resting her hands against his chest. "You say that every day, Mr. Vale."
"Call me Adrian," he reminded her softly, leaning down to press a tender kiss to her forehead. "Especially today. Since we're getting married in three hours."
Claire laughed softly, her eyes sparkling with absolute joy. "I still can't believe all of this is real. Sometimes I feel like I'm still dreaming in the staff room."
"It's real," Adrian promised, looking deep into her eyes. "Every single part of it."
Suddenly, the private elevator chime echoed through the penthouse.
The doors slid open, and Daniel Mercer stepped out, holding a thick manila envelope and looking uncharacteristically flustered. He stopped dead in his tracks, clearing his throat awkwardly.
"Boss... sorry to interrupt the rehearsal," Daniel said, holding up the envelope. "But we have a situation at the ground-floor security checkpoint."
Adrian frowned, dropping his hands from Claire's face as the protective, cold edge of the syndicate leader flickered back into his eyes for a split second. "What kind of situation, Daniel? I thought all external threats were neutralized."
"It's not a threat, boss," Daniel said, scratching the back of his neck with a deeply bewildered expression. "It's... well, it's a woman."
Claire raised an eyebrow. "A woman?"
"Yeah," Daniel muttered, handing the manila envelope to Adrian. "She bypassed our biometric scanners using an override code that hasn't been active in over ten years. And she's holding a stuffed rabbit with one crooked ear."
Adrian froze.
The color drained from his face as his eyes darted down to the envelope in his hand. The handwriting on the front wasn't digital; it was heavy, rushed ink in a script he hadn't seen since a rainy highway outside Chicago three years ago.
Claire noticed the sudden shift in his demeanor. "Adrian? Who is it?"
Adrian slowly opened the envelope, pulling out a single photograph and a handwritten letter. His hands were trembling—the man who had stared down armed mercenaries without blinking was shaking.
He looked up at Claire, his slate-gray eyes wide with utter disbelief, shock, and a wave of raw emotion that threatened to tear his entire world apart all over again.

"It's impossible," Adrian whispered, his voice cracking. "She... she died in the car."
Daniel swallowed hard, looking toward the elevator foyer. "Boss... she says she wants to meet her daughter."
