Chapter 11 - The Phantom Shadow

The morning sun had barely cleared the horizon over Lake Michigan when the peace of the Lake Forest estate was shattered once again. It came not with the sound of gunfire, but with the quiet delivery of a heavy, wax-sealed black envelope, bearing the embossed silver crest of a falcon.

Dorian stood at the marble island in the kitchen, holding the envelope unopened. His face was rigid, all warmth from the previous evening evaporating like mist.

"What is that?" I asked, coming up beside him, wrapping my robe tighter around my seven-month bump.

"A ghost," Dorian said, his voice flat and dangerous. "The Apex Syndicate. The global council that sits above every cartel, mafia family, and illegal conglomerate in Europe."

He broke the seal and pulled out a heavy parchment. The letter contained only two lines of elegant calligraphy:

The Master Key belongs to the Council, non to a ghost’s daughter. Hand over the girl and her biometrics by midnight, or Chicago will burn from the inside out.

I felt cold air fill my lungs. "My father... he didn't just build your banking network, did he?"

"No," Dorian whispered, looking at me with a solemnity that made my heart drop. "Your father was the chief treasurer for Apex before he escaped to America thirty years ago. He hid their entire offshore sovereign fund—over fifty billion dollars—inside a digital vault that can only be unlocked by your bloodline. He didn't leave you a fortune, Alina. He left you the key to the dark world’s treasury."

Before I could process the words, the estate’s security monitors in the hallway began to flash yellow. Noah rushed into the kitchen, his tactical earpiece buzzing with frantic static.

"Boss," Noah said, his voice tense. "Lord Sterling just landed at O’Hare on a diplomatic transport. He’s already called an emergency assembly of the Midwest governors. He’s not attacking from the alleys, Dorian. He’s coming with the full weight of international law."
