Chapter 16 - The Serpent's Mask

Dominic stood in the doorway, his tactical uniform pristine, completely untouched by blood or powder burns. In his left hand, he held a portable biometric scanner wired directly into Sterling’s offshore satellite grid.
"Dominic..." Dr. Mercer whispered, stepping back in terror. "What are you doing?"
"Shut up, Doctor," Dominic said calmly, raising his gun and firing a single shot into the wall beside her. Dr. Mercer collapsed to the floor in fear, clutching her head.
I pressed Leo tighter against my breast, my heart pounding violently against my ribs. "You were the second mole. Caleb was just the distraction."
"Caleb was an idiot who thought small," Dominic sneered, walking slowly toward my bed, his dark eyes fixated on the digital ledger resting on the bedside table. "Sterling offered me a full seat on the Apex Council. Why be a loyal soldier for Dorian Cross when I can help govern the global financial system?"
"Dorian will rip you apart with his bare hands," I hissed, my voice trembling with pure rage.
"Dorian is currently pinned down in the upper courtyard fighting forty mercenaries I personally invited onto the grounds," Dominic replied with a cold laugh. "He has no idea I’m down here. Now, give me your hand, Alina. Place your thumb on the scanner, unlock the fifty billion, and I might just leave you and the bastard alive."
He reached down, grabbing my wrist with brutal force, trying to pull my thumb toward the glowing glass screen.
"Let go of my wife!" a thunderous voice roared from the entrance.

Dominic spun around, pulling the baby’s crib frame into his sightline, but he was too slow.
Noah stood in the doorway, bleeding from a deep wound on his shoulder, his gun raised, staring at his own brother with a look of utter, soul-crushing betrayal.
