Chapter 6 - The Unraveling Lie

The armored Mercedes slammed into the side wall of the expressway off-ramp, steam billowing from the crushed radiator as the engine sputtered and died.
Silence fell over the wreck, broken only by the sound of pouring rain and the sharp scent of burnt rubber and gunpowder.
"Noah! Status!" Dorian barked, lifting himself off me.
"Alive, boss," Noah groaned from the front seat, slumping over the steering wheel, his face covered in blood from a head wound. "Tires are shredded. We aren't going anywhere."
Dorian checked my face, his hands frantically feeling my arms, my shoulders, my cheeks. "Alina? Did anything hit you? Are you bleeding?"
"I'm okay," I gasped, holding my stomach, breathing heavily. "I'm okay. The baby... I don't feel any pain."
Dorian let out a ragged breath of relief, leaning his forehead against mine for a brief second. "Thank God."
Outside, heavy footsteps approached through the puddle-strewn pavement. The door handles clicked, but the heavy electronic deadbolts held firm.
"Dorian Cross!" a familiar voice yelled through the shattered window over the sound of rain. It was Caleb. "Give it up, man! The car is dead. You have five rifles pointed at that cabin. Victor wants the girl alive, but he doesn't care how many holes you have in you!"
Dorian’s hand tightened around his sidearm. He looked at me, his eyes dark with a sudden, devastating resignation.
"Alina," he whispered, his voice barely audible over the storm outside. "I lied to you earlier."
I looked at him, my heart freezing. "What?"
"Six months ago... I didn't just push you away because of Valenti," Dorian whispered, his eyes swimming with uncharacteristic tears. "Six months ago, I was diagnosed with an aggressive neurological toxin. Poisoned slowly over two years by someone in my inner circle. The doctors gave me six months to live."
My breath caught in my throat. The world stopped spinning.
"I thought I was dying," Dorian continued, tears slipping down his blood-stained cheek. "I didn't want you to watch me deteriorate into nothing. I didn't want you to spend your youth nursing a dying monster. So I forced the divorce. I made you hate me so that when I died, it wouldn't kill you."
"Dorian..." I choked out, horror washing over me.
"30 days ago, a specialist in Munich found an antidote," he said with a sad, bitter smile. "I survived the poison. I was going to call off the divorce... but then Caleb sold the security protocols to Valenti. I was too late."
"You idiot," I sobbed, clutching his coat collar, tears streaming down my face. "You arrogant, stupid idiot!"
"I know," he whispered. "I'm sorry."
He kissed me then—a desperate, fierce, heartbreaking kiss that tasted of rain, blood, and five years of unspoken love.

Then he pulled back, setting his hand on the door unlock switch.
"Stay down," Dorian commanded. "I am going to finish this."
