Chapter 17 - The Banking Override

"Put the gun down, Dominic," Noah choked out, his hands shaking as he aimed at his own flesh and blood. "Please... don't do this."
"Step aside, Noah!" Dominic yelled, his face twisting with desperation. "We can both be kings! We don't have to bow to Dorian anymore! We spent ten years taking bullets for him while he lived like royalty!"
"Dorian gave us a home when we were nothing!" Noah screamed, tears cutting trails through the soot on his cheeks. "You sold your soul to Sterling!"
While the brothers screamed at each other, I looked down at the biometric tablet Dominic had dropped onto the edge of my bed. My mind worked with desperate clarity.
My father didn't just design the master key to open the vault, I remembered from the ancient ledger notes. He designed a poisoned pill.
Using my left hand while keeping Leo concealed under my blanket, I pressed my thumb onto the scanner screen.
A green light flashed: BIOMETRIC CONFIRMED.
Dominic looked over at the tablet, a triumphant grin breaking across his face as the screen began processing the command. "Yes! The override is complete!"
"Look at the screen again, Dominic," I said softly, my voice filled with icy triumph.
Dominic’s grin vanished as he looked down. The display wasn't transferring the fifty billion dollars to Sterling's account.
Instead, the screen read: GLOBAL ASSET LIQUIDATION INITIATED. NOTIFYING FINANCIAL CRIMES ENFORCEMENT NETWORK (FINCEN). ALL APEX FUNDS DISTRIBUTED TO INTERNATIONAL CHARITIES AND REPOSITORY BANKS.

"What did you do?!" Dominic shrieked, his eyes wide with horror as he watched fifty billion dollars melt away into thousands of untraceable global public funds, stripping Apex of every cent it possessed in real-time.
"I didn't open the vault," I smiled, looking up at him with utter disdain. "I destroyed it. Sterling is broke. You're broke. You sold your life for zero dollars."
