Chapter 13 - The Poisoned Truce

The financial counter-offensive began at 2:00 AM. Sitting in the home office, I sat at the central terminal with my father’s ancient leather-bound ledger open beside me, typing in the master override encryption keys.

"If I execute this protocol," I said, looking up at Dorian, who stood behind me with his hands on my shoulders, "it triggers an automatic forensic audit across all Apex accounts in Switzerland, Liechtenstein, and the Caymans. It will freeze fifty billion dollars instantly."

"Do it," Dorian said coldly. "Starve the snake before it bites."

I hit the final key. Across the triple monitors, thousands of lines of red code streamed past. Across the globe, bank accounts belonging to the world's most dangerous figures were locked down simultaneously.

Suddenly, a sharp, agonizing cramp shot through my lower abdomen, causing me to gasp and double over, gripping the edge of the mahogany desk.

"Alina!" Dorian caught me before I could fall, pulling me into his arms.

"Something's... something's wrong," I gasped, clutching my stomach as another wave of intense pain seized my body. A sudden warmth trickled down my dress.

"Noah! Get the medical unit!" Dorian roared, his voice filled with frantic panic as he lifted me into his arms. "Her water broke!"

I was only thirty-two weeks pregnant.

The monitor on my desk flickered, displaying an incoming video transmission from an untraceable IP address. Sterling's face appeared on the screen, holding a small empty vial.

"Did you really think I didn't notice your tea at the Drake Hotel, Mrs. Cross?" Sterling said with a smooth, sickening chuckle. "Synthetic oxytocin. A colorless, tasteless labor inducer. You have two hours to deliver the master key, or both you and your premature heir will bleed out."
