Chapter 10 - Justice in Full BloomSix months later, the courtroom was bathed in the warm, golden light of early summer.
I walked up the grand marble steps of the county courthouse holding a stroller carrying our healthy, laughing baby girl, Maya. Her bright eyes sparkled with curiosity as she reached out tiny hands to catch the sunlight dancing off the brass railings.
Detective Vance waited for us at the top of the landing, holding a fresh, unsealed envelope bearing the state seal.
"Good morning, counselor," Vance joked gently, tipping an imaginary hat as we approached. "Ready for the final paperwork?"
"Always," I smiled, adjusting Maya’s sun hat.
Inside Courtroom 3, the proceedings were swift and final. Judge Thomas sat on the bench, his expression solemn yet triumphant as he reviewed the final asset liquidation documents.
"In the matter of State v. Miller & Miller," Judge Thomas announced into the microphone, his voice echoing clearly through the room. "All fraudulent deeds, forged power-of-attorney claims, and illegal bridge loans executed by the defendants have been officially voided and permanently annulled by judicial decree."
He looked down from the bench directly at me.
"Furthermore, the sole title, deed, and ownership rights to the property located at 414 Elm Street are hereby restored unconditionally, in perpetuity, to the rightful heir: Jessica Vance-Miller and her surviving descendants."
The gallery erupted into quiet applause. Mrs. Patel, sitting in the front row, wiped away tears of pure joy, while Detective Vance gave a subtle, respectful nod.
I looked down at Maya, who let out a happy gurgle and grabbed my finger with surprising strength.
