Chapter 15 - The Final PleaThe trial of Arthur Miller Jr. lasted less than four days.

With the recovered ledger, municipal audit trails, and the live tactical recording of his armed break-in captured by the upgraded security grid, the defense didn't even attempt an opening statement.
Sitting in the courtroom gallery with Maya sleeping peacefully in her stroller, I watched as the judge handed down the verdict: forty-five years without parole for conspiracy, armed trespass, and his direct involvement in the fraudulent land scheme that had ruined multiple families over three decades.
As the bailiffs led Arthur out of the courtroom, he shot one last venomous glare in my direction. I didn't look away. I met his gaze with absolute, unyielding calm.
When the doors closed behind him, Detective Vance walked over and handed me a thick, official envelope bearing the state seal of the District Attorney.
"It's over, Jessi," Vance said quietly, smiling down at Maya. "Every charge against the conspirators has resulted in a conviction. The state has officially cleared your father’s name of any wrongdoing, and all fraudulent claims against the estate have been permanently nullified."
I took the envelope, feeling a profound wave of peace wash over me. The ghosts of the past had finally been laid to rest.

"Thank you, Detective," I said, shaking his hand firmly. "For everything."
"Don't thank me," Vance replied warmly. "Thank your father. He built a fortress that even the most corrupt men couldn't tear down."
