Chapter 5 - The Arraignment AmbushThe courtroom was packed to the gills. Word of the high-society fraud, the brutal domestic assault on an eight-month-pregnant woman, and the emerging homicide investigation had turned the local courthouse into a media circus. Reporters crowded the aisles, holding microphones and cameras aloft as the bailiff called the room to order.

Luca sat at the defense table next to a high-priced public defender, looking pale, disheveled, and stripped of his usual arrogant swagger. Across the aisle, I sat upright in the gallery, my hand resting protectively over my swollen belly. Behind me sat Mrs. Patel and Detective Vance, forming an unbreakable human wall of support.
Judge Thomas, a sharp-eyed veteran of the bench, adjusted his glasses and looked down at the staggering stack of files before him.
"We are here for the formal arraignment of Luca Miller on charges of felony domestic assault, aggravated battery of an unborn child, forgery of legal documents, and wire fraud," Judge Thomas announced, his voice echoing off the high mahogany walls. "How does the defendant plead?"
Luca’s attorney stood up, adjusting his tie nervously. "Not guilty on all counts, Your Honor. We maintain that the domestic incident was an unfortunate accident, and the financial disputes are civil matters currently being misinterpreted by overzealous investigators."
"Civil matters?" Detective Vance muttered loudly from the gallery, earning a sharp rap of the gavel from the bailiff.
Judge Thomas frowned, flipping through Detective Vance’s primary affidavit. "Mr. Miller, the state has presented a 4K digital video recording recovered from a secure, tamper-proof local server that explicitly captures premeditated financial fraud and a violent physical assault. Furthermore, the district attorney has just filed an emergency motion to upgrade the charges."
Luca’s attorney froze. "Upgrade, Your Honor? On what grounds?"
The side doors of the courtroom opened, and District Attorney Sarah Sterling strode in, carrying a fresh red folder. She approached the podium with measured, predatory grace.
"On the grounds of first-degree homicide and conspiracy to commit murder, Your Honor," Sterling announced cleanly, the words dropping into the silent courtroom like a lead weight.
Gasps rippled through the gallery. Luca whipped his head around toward the prosecution table, his eyes wide with sheer terror.
"The state has uncovered conclusive forensic and pharmaceutical evidence," Sterling continued, laying out the lab reports, "proving that the defendant’s mother, Wendy Miller, systematically poisoned victim Jessi Miller’s late father—Arthur Vance—to accelerate the probate process and secure clear title to the property before the victim could discover their massive multi-million-dollar insolvency."
Luca leaped to his feet, shouting across the room. "That's a lie! My mother didn't do anything! You have no proof connecting me to that!"
"Sit down, Mr. Miller, or I will have you held in contempt!" Judge Thomas slammed his gavel down twice, the sharp crack silencing the room instantly. He turned his piercing gaze toward Luca. "Given the severity of the capital charges now pending, bail is denied. The defendant will be remanded to custody without the possibility of release."

As the bailiffs stepped forward, snapping heavy steel cuffs back onto Luca’s wrists, he turned his frantic eyes toward me in the front row. His mouth moved, forming a silent plea for mercy, for family loyalty, for anything to save him.
I didn't blink. I didn't flinch. I simply placed my hand on my stomach, felt our baby girl give a powerful, defiant kick, and looked away.
