Chapter 14 - Checkmate in the Kitchen"Well, well, well," Uncle Arthur Jr. chuckled softly, stepping further onto the tile floor—the exact same tile floor where Luca had shoved me eight months ago. "Stubbornness really does run in the family, doesn't it?"

"You're trespassing, Arthur," I said, my voice entirely devoid of fear. I kept my left hand resting casually near the edge of the marble counter, right above the hidden panic button my father had wired directly to Detective Vance’s dispatch terminal.
"I'm reclaiming property that rightfully belongs to the Miller dynasty," he snapped, raising the barrel of the gun slightly. "Your father was a thief who stole our legacy. Wendy and Luca just tried to fix his mistakes. But you... you had to play the hero."
"My father built this house with honest work," I replied, standing up slowly from the stool. "You and Wendy built your lives on forged signatures, embezzlement, and poison."
Arthur’s eyes narrowed with venom. He took a step forward, closing the distance between us. "It doesn't matter what you know. Once I take that ledger from your safe and clean out the hard drives, you'll suffer another tragic domestic accident. Only this time... there won't be a baby to save."
He lunged forward, reaching for my arm.
That was his mistake.
I didn't run. I dropped my weight downward and slammed my palm directly onto the brass panic button embedded in the counter.
CLANG-WEE-WEE-WEE!
The house instantly erupted with blinding strobe lights and a high-decibel tactical alarm that shook the glass windows. At the exact same second, the heavy steel security shutters dropped over every door and window in the kitchen with a deafening thud, trapping Arthur inside like a rat in a cage.
Arthur cursed loudly, swinging around to shoot the control panel, but before he could pull the trigger, the front door was blown off its hinges with a battering ram.
"POLICE! DROP YOUR WEAPON!"
Detective Vance and a dozen tactical officers swarmed into the kitchen, tackling Arthur to the tile floor before he could even raise his sights. Metal cuffs snapped onto his wrists with brutal efficiency.
Vance stepped over the struggling man, looking directly at me with a mixture of profound relief and sheer disbelief.

"You okay, Jessi?" Vance asked, catching his breath.
I looked down at the floor where Arthur was being hauled to his feet. "Never better, Detective. The board is clear."
