Chapter 12 - The Hidden LedgerVance fished the lockbox out of the alcove using a pair of heavy tongs. The metal was cold, oxidized, and heavy. Using a bolt cutter, Miller snapped the rusted padlock with a sharp crack.

Inside lay a thick, leather-bound ledger and a stack of legal documents tied with a faded yellow ribbon.
I reached out and opened the ledger. The first page was dated nearly fifteen years ago, filled with my father’s meticulous handwriting. But as I flipped through the pages, the handwriting changed—shifting into a frantic, sloping script belonging to a man named Arthur Miller senior... Luca’s own grandfather.
"This isn't just about my father's house," I whispered, staring at a series of cross-referenced property titles and financial drafts. "This goes back generations."
Detective Vance pulled a document from the center of the stack and scanned it under the harsh basement bulb. His eyes widened.
"It's a generational land dispute," Vance said, his voice dropping to a low rumble. "Arthur Miller senior didn't just build this neighborhood. He was partners with your father's family decades ago. But there was a bitter fallout over a massive industrial zoning grant in the seventies."
"What does that have to do with Luca and Wendy?" I asked, feeling the walls of the basement closing in around me.
"Everything," Vance replied, pointing to a highlighted paragraph on the page. "The land this entire subdivision sits on—including your brick house and the sprawling commercial lots Luca was trying to save from foreclosure—was originally owned by your family. Wendy’s family lost their share in a bankruptcy fraud case back in 1989. They’ve spent the last thirty years trying to reclaim it through shell companies and fraudulent deeds."
Officer Miller whistled softly. "So Luca wasn't just marrying you for love or even just a quick buck. He was executing a decades-old family vendetta to steal back what his ancestors lost."

"And my father found out," I said, the pieces of the puzzle suddenly snapping together with terrifying clarity. "That’s why Wendy poisoned him. Not just because of the title, but because my father was about to expose their entire family fraud to the state attorney general."
Vance closed the ledger and placed it carefully inside an evidence bag. "Which means Wendy had an accomplice inside the local municipal records office who helped her forge the original land grants. And based on that note left on your porch today... that accomplice knows we found this box."
