Chapter 6 - The Spider’s WebWith Luca locked inside the county detention center and a statewide warrant issued for Wendy Miller’s immediate arrest, the investigation widened into a full-scale corporate and financial audit.

Wendy had gone to ground. Within hours of the arraignment, intelligence reports indicated she had drained her personal liquid accounts, packed a single suitcase, and fled toward the northern state line using a burner vehicle registered under a false alias.

Detective Vance called me into his precinct office late Wednesday evening. The room was dark, illuminated only by the cold blue glow of multiple monitors displaying wiretap tracking and license plate reader logs.

"She’s running, Jessi," Vance said, leaning over a map of the interstate grid. "Wendy knows the game is up. Without Luca to take the fall alone, she’s trying to liquidate offshore assets she set up through shell corporations in the Caymans."

"How deep does the corruption go?" I asked, taking a sip from a paper cup of bitter black coffee.

"Deeps roots," Vance replied, tapping a key on his keyboard. "It wasn't just your father’s house. Over the past five years, Wendy and Luca targeted at least three other elderly homeowners in the county who passed away under 'suspicious medical circumstances' while their properties were tied up in complex reverse mortgages managed by Wendy's real estate agency."

I felt a cold shiver run down my spine. "They were serial predators hiding behind a respectable family facade."

"Exactly," Vance said. "And your father’s house wasn't just a random asset. It was the keystone holding their entire fraudulent empire together. Once the bank discovered the title was legally untouchable and tied directly to you with ironclad clauses, their house of cards collapsed."

Just then, Officer Miller burst into the office, holding a flashing tablet.

"Detective! We got a hit on the automated license plate readers up on Route 9," Miller said quickly. "A silver sedan matching the alias vehicle Wendy Miller is driving just passed through a toll checkpoint heading toward the Canadian border. Local state troopers are moving in to intercept."

Vance grabbed his tactical vest from the chair rack. "Let's ride."
