Chapter 17 - Shadows on the HorizonDespite the peace that had settled over Elm Street, the digital age has a way of resurrecting ghosts when you least expect them.

It was a rainy Tuesday evening in late autumn when the notification pinged on my laptop.

I was sitting at the kitchen island, reviewing architectural blueprints for a local community center project I had taken on. The alert wasn't an email or a text message; it was a secure data packet routed through an encrypted proxy server—the exact protocol my father’s offline system used before it was integrated into the modernized smart-home network.

My fingers hovered over the trackpad. I clicked open the file.

It was a single audio file, dated just three hours earlier, intercepted from an international telecom relay station in Zurich, Switzerland.

I hit play.

Static hissed through the kitchen speakers for a second before a familiar, rasping voice cut through the noise—a voice that was supposed to be spending the rest of her natural life behind maximum-security prison bars.

“...the transfer codes from the offshore accounts haven't been touched yet,” Wendy Miller’s voice hissed through the audio stream, clear as day. “Once the federal appeal goes through on technicalities regarding the 1989 bankruptcy statute, the estate assets revert to surviving bloodline proxies. And Jessi won't even see it coming.”

My breath caught in my throat.

Wendy wasn't just rotting in a cell. Through a loophole in the federal appellate system and an unprosecuted offshore trust, she had found a way to mount a legal counter-attack from inside prison walls—using hidden assets we never even knew existed.
