Chapter 20 - UnbrokenThree years after the night that nearly destroyed us, Maya started her very first day of preschool.

She stood on the front porch of the brick house on Elm Street, wearing a bright yellow backpack that was way too big for her small shoulders, holding my hand with a proud, gap-toothed smile.
"Ready, sweetie?" I asked, kneeling down to adjust her collar.
"Ready, Mommy!" she cheered, her eyes sparkling with absolute confidence.
As we walked down the stone pathway toward the waiting yellow school bus, I looked back at the house. The small brick structure stood tall, solid, and immovable against the morning breeze—a monument to resilience, intelligence, and a father's enduring love.
Detective Vance pulled up in his cruiser just as the bus arrived, stepping out to tip his hat to Maya with a warm grin.
"Have a great first day, kiddo!" Vance called out.
"Thank you, Uncle Marcus!" Maya waved excitedly before bounding up the bus steps like a little adventurer ready to conquer the world.

I stood on the sidewalk, watching the bus pull away down the quiet, sunlit street. I placed my hand gently on my left arm, feeling the smooth, silver line of my scar. It wasn't a mark of pain anymore. It was a badge of honor.
We had survived the fire, the betrayal, the corporate predators, and the ghosts of the past. And as I turned back toward the house to begin the rest of our lives, I knew with absolute certainty that nothing—absolutely nothing—could ever break us again.
