Chapter 14 - Blood Is Thicker Than FearI unlocked the heavy deadbolt and pulled the door open. Richard looked older, his hair completely white, his shoulders slouched under the weight of a worn leather jacket.

"Hello, Carolyn," he said quietly, his eyes avoiding mine. "Can I come in? It's freezing out here."
"What are you doing here, Richard?" I demanded, blocking the doorway with my body. "We haven't spoken in a decade. You didn't even call when my husband died, or when Darla..." My voice caught in my throat.
"I know, I know, I was a coward," Richard said, stepping forward regardless, forcing me to back up. "I heard the news on the national broadcast. The federal raids, the connection to Darla... Carolyn, they're coming after the family. Not just Vance’s men, but the higher-ups. They think Darla left something else with you."
"How do you even know about that?" I snapped, narrowing my eyes. "The media didn't mention any extra data nodes."
Richard hesitated, his gaze darting toward the living room where the children were playing. "Because... because I was approached three days ago by a man claiming to represent the syndicate. They offered me a hundred thousand dollars to find out if Darla contacted you before she died."
Anger flared hot and bright in my chest. I raised my hand and slapped him across the face with a crack that echoed through the quiet foyer.

"Get out of my house," I hissed, tears of betrayal stinging my eyes. "You would sell your own blood for blood money?"
"I didn't take it, Carolyn!" Richard cried out, holding his cheek, tears welling in his own eyes. "That's why I came here! When I realized what monsters they were, I walked away. I came to warn you. They're planning a final push tonight."
