My hands trembled so violently that the edge of the brown wrapping paper tore, leaving a sharp, jagged sound in the quiet living room. Darla's neat, precise cursive had always been her signature trait; even as a child, she crossed her t's with absolute military precision. Chapter 20 - A Promise KeptI smiled, pulling Lily down onto the porch swing beside me and wrapping my arm around her.

"Of course we can, sweetheart," I whispered.

We walked inside together, lifted the box labeled for Lily’s tenth birthday, and popped the clasp. Inside lay a brand-new journal with a silver-plated cover, a handwritten letter from her mother filled with words of love and encouragement, and a small silver locket shaped like a butterfly.

Lily opened the locket, tears shimmering in her bright eyes, and held it up to the afternoon sun.

"She really did plan for everything, didn't she, Grandma?" Lily asked softly.

"She loved you more than life itself," I replied, pressing a gentle kiss to the top of her head. "And as long as I have breath in my body, I will make sure her love keeps you safe forever."
