Chapter 15 - The Siege at MidnightWe didn't have time to argue. Agent Sterling, who had left two undercover agents parked down the street, suddenly burst through our back door, her weapon drawn.

"Mrs. Miller, we intercepted an encrypted radio transmission," Sterling said, breathless. "Vance’s remaining enforcers have formed a rogue unit. They aren't waiting for a trial. They're coming to burn this house to the ground to destroy all remaining evidence."

"How much time do we have?" I asked, my voice terrifyingly calm.

"Minutes," Sterling replied.

"Not enough time to evacuate safely," Tommy’s voice boomed from the doorway. He had slipped in through the side gate, carrying a duffel bag filled with heavy-duty communication gear and additional firearms. "They've already blocked the main road out of the subdivision."

I looked at the children. Lily was holding Rosie in her arms, her wide, terrified eyes looking between me and the federal agents. Ben and Molly were crying softly in the corner.

"We aren't running," I said, a cold, unyielding resolve taking over my entire body. At seventy-one, I had survived loss, poverty, and grief. I was not about to let anyone touch my grandchildren. "We make our stand right here."

"Carolyn, you can't fight a tactical unit," Richard pleaded.

"Watch me," I replied.
