The federal government officially cleared our family name, and the restitution funds recovered from Viktor Vance’s frozen offshore accounts were placed into a secure trust fund for Lily, Ben, Molly, and Rosie, ensuring their education and future were completely provided for.

The diner on Route 9 gave me a permanent plaque on my favorite booth, though I finally retired from working the double shifts. I didn't need to work anymore, but I still baked pies on Sundays for the neighborhood kids.

One afternoon, while the older children were at school and Rosie was napping upstairs, I sat on the front porch with a cup of chamomile tea. The heavy steel lockbox was gone, handed over to federal archives, but Darla’s birthday boxes remained neatly stacked in the hallway closet.

"Grandma, today is my tenth birthday," Lily said with a small, genuine smile. "Can we open Mom's box now?"
