Chapter 18 - The Final ConfrontationAs the smoke cleared, I walked out of the kitchen, resting the heavy shotgun against my shoulder. In the middle of the living room, the leader of the rogue unit—a scarred, heavy-set enforcer named Gregor—was pinned to the floor by Agent Sterling.

Gregor spat blood onto our rug, laughing darkly as he looked up at me. "You think you won, old lady? The network... it's global. Someone else will always take our place."
"Let them try," I said, stepping closer and looking down at him with absolute pity. "Because as long as I'm breathing, no one lays a finger on my family."
Sirens wailed right outside our driveway as half a dozen FBI cruisers and local police cars flooded the street, their red and blue lights painting our walls in flashing colors.
Agent Sterling clicked handcuffs securely around Gregor’s wrists and hauled him to his feet. "It's over, Gregor. The network is completely dismantled. Every asset has been seized."

As they led him away, Richard walked over to me, his head bowed in deep shame. "I'm sorry, Carolyn. For everything."
"You helped warn us, Richard," I said softly. "Don't ever come back here, but at least you found your spine before it was too late."
