Chapter 1 - THE TRUTH BEHIND THE LENSMy heart hammered against my ribs as I stared at the tiny screen of my smartphone in the back of the speeding cab. The neon lights of Manhattan blurred into streaks of red and gold as the city celebrated the arrival of the New Year, but inside the cab, the air felt sub-zero.

On the live feed from my apartment building's storage room, the figure stepped closer to the overhead motion sensor.
It wasn't a burglar.
It was my brother-in-law, Mark.
He wasn’t in Miami. Or at least, he had come back—or never left. He was holding a heavy duffel bag in one hand and a bottle of expensive champagne in the other. I watched in stunned silence as he pulled a thick envelope out of his jacket pocket and tossed it onto a shelf stacked with old boxes.
What was in that envelope?
My phone buzzed again. This time, it was a silent push notification from a secondary security camera—the one hidden behind the utility pipes in the basement hallway, which recorded every audio frequency in the storage wing. I tapped the icon and cranked the volume up, pressing the speaker against my ear.
Mark’s voice crackled through the phone, sharp and arrogant. He was on a phone call.
"Yeah, everything's secure," Mark scoffed, laughing loudly. "The old lady left the backup key under the water meter. No, Maya doesn't suspect a thing. She’s too weak to even crawl out of that chair. Honestly, letting her starve for a few days was the easiest way to keep her quiet. If David finds out we looted his private safe before we left for Florida, he’ll cut off our allowances entirely."
A cold, deadly calm washed over me. The mafia underworld in Stuttgart knew me as a man who settled debts with absolute finality. But this wasn't business. This was family. And betrayal by blood tasted like ash and copper.
"Did you hide the ledger?" a woman’s voice hissed through the speaker. My mother.
"It's right here in the wall compartment," Mark replied. "Along with the extra cash and the fake title deeds to David’s Brooklyn properties. Once we get his signature notarized through Chloe’s corrupt lawyer friend in Queens, everything he owns legally belongs to us. We’ll leave him broke, broken, and begging on the streets."

Beside me in the cab, Maya shivered violently, her head resting heavily against my shoulder. Her breath was hot and shallow—a sign of a severe postpartum infection setting in.
"Hold on, Maya," I whispered, pressing a kiss to her damp forehead. My voice was a low, dangerous growl. "Your nightmare ends tonight. And theirs begins."
