Chapter 8 - THE SHADOW RETURNSTwo weeks later, Maya was discharged and we returned to a completely transformed home.

I hadn't just cleaned the Brooklyn apartment—I had bought out the entire top floor of the building, tearing down walls to create a sprawling, impenetrable penthouse fortress equipped with state-of-the-art biometric security, bulletproof glass, and a dedicated 24/7 security detail managed by Viktor.
My underground business associates in Europe had been informed of my permanent relocation to New York. My days of traveling across international syndicates were over; my empire was now centered right here, protecting my wife and son.
It was a cold, crisp Tuesday evening in mid-January.
I was sitting in my private home office, reviewing real estate portfolios for a new family home in upstate New York, when Viktor knocked softly on the heavy oak door and stepped inside.
He didn't look like his usual calm, composed self. His brow was furrowed, and a tablet was clutched tightly in his hand.
"Boss, we have a situation," Viktor said, his voice low.
I looked up, setting my pen down. "What kind of situation? Did my mother try to contact Maya again?"
"Worse," Viktor replied, placing the tablet on my desk. "Your mother and sister didn't leave New York. In fact, they checked into a cheap motel near the financial district. And an hour ago, they were visited by someone unexpected."
I glanced down at the tablet screen. It displayed security footage from a public parking lot three blocks from my mother's motel.
A sleek, black European sedan—registered under a dummy corporation linked to Viktor’s greatest rival in the Italian-American syndicate, a ruthless loan shark named Salvatore Rossi—was parked outside.
My eyes narrowed into dangerous slits.
"Salvatore Rossi," I whispered, the name tasting like poison on my tongue. "What does Rossi want with my mother?"
"They’ve been meeting for the past two hours," Viktor said grimly. "According to our wiretap inside the motel room... your mother and sister have been feeding Rossi confidential information about your corporate structure, your offshore accounts, and your personal security routines. In exchange, Rossi has promised to finance their legal battle to sue you for custody of Liam and half of your empire."

A chilling, deathly silence filled the office.
They weren't just bitter, defeated relatives anymore. They had crossed the line from petty betrayal into open warfare by aligning themselves with my deadliest enemy.
