Chapter 7 - THE HOSPITAL REUNIONThree days later, the private VIP recovery suite at Presbyterian Hospital felt warm, safe, and peaceful.

The harsh fluorescent lights had been dimmed, replaced by the soft, golden glow of bedside lamps. The scent of antiseptic had been replaced by the delicate aroma of fresh white lilies I had had delivered that morning.
Maya sat propped up against a stack of plush pillows, wearing a soft cashmere robe. Her color had returned, her skin glowing with warmth, and her eyes—though still carrying the shadow of exhaustion—shone with a quiet, profound relief.
In her arms, little Liam was sleeping peacefully, swaddled in a thick, cashmere blanket I had bought him in Europe.
I sat in a chair beside the bed, peeling an orange and feeding her a segment at a time.
"Are you sure you’re okay, Maya?" I asked for the tenth time, my thumb gently brushing a stray lock of hair from her forehead. "If you feel any pain at all, I’ll have the head physician check the stitches again."
Maya smiled softly, catching my hand and pressing her cheek against my palm.
"I’m okay, David," she whispered, her voice steady and clear. "The pain is fading. And knowing that... knowing that your mother and sister are gone... I finally feel safe."
"They will never touch this family again," I said, my voice firm and absolute. "Their bank accounts are locked, their house is gone, and Mark is facing federal wire fraud charges for looting my business vaults while we were away. They are entirely cut off."
Maya looked down at Liam, her eyes misting with unshed tears. "When you walked through that door on New Year's Eve... I thought I was hallucinating. I thought death was playing tricks on me. Why did you come back early, David? You were supposed to be in Germany for another week."
I smiled, leaning down to press a tender kiss to her lips.
"Because my heart told me something was wrong," I confessed quietly. "I couldn't sleep, I couldn't focus on business, and all I could think about was you and our son. I realized that all the money, all the power, and all the empire in the world mean absolutely nothing if I lose the two people who make my life worth living."
Maya wrapped her arms around my neck, burying her face in my shoulder as quiet tears of relief finally broke free.
"I love you, David," she whispered against my skin.
May you like
"And I love you," I replied, holding them both tighter than I had ever held anything in my life. "We’re starting over. Just the three of us. Clean slate. New beginning."
Little Liam let out a tiny coo in his sleep, as if agreeing with his father's words.
