Chapter 5 - THE QUEENS CONFRONTATIONBy 7:00 a.m. on New Year’s Day, the sky over New York was a bruised shade of purple and gray.

Maya was stable, resting comfortably in the hospital's intensive care unit after a successful surgical drainage and heavy intravenous antibiotics. Little Liam was sleeping soundly in a bassinet right beside her, safe, warm, and fed.
I stood outside my mother’s suburban house in Queens—the very house I had purchased for her with my own hard-earned money five years ago.
A sleek black town car pulled into the driveway. The doors flew open, and my mother and sister Chloe stumbled out, looking disheveled, jet-lagged, and terrified. They had caught the earliest possible flight out of Miami, their designer luggage trailing behind them.
"David!" my mother shrieked, rushing toward the porch with her hands raised defensively. "What is the meaning of this?! Dragging us back from vacation over some ridiculous dramatics! Mark told us Maya passed away, but the hospital says she’s alive! You’re terrorizing your own family over an ungrateful gold-digger!"
I didn't move. I stood leaning against a porch pillar, my hands tucked deep into my wool coat pockets, watching them approach like a predator waiting for the gazelle to step into the clearing.
Chloe stepped up beside our mother, crossing her arms with a defensive sneer. "Honestly, David, you’ve always chosen outsiders over your own blood. Maya brought nothing to this family except debt and whining. If she starved for a few days, it built character. Why are you blowing this out of proportion?"
"Character," I repeated, my voice dangerously calm.
I stepped forward, pulling a thick manila folder from my coat and tossing it onto the porch table between us.
"Open it," I commanded.
Chloe scoffed, flipping open the folder. Inside were high-resolution photographs: Maya bleeding through her bandages; the empty refrigerator; the cold cup of instant noodles; the unopened pharmacy bag containing life-saving antibiotics; and finally, screenshots of Mark’s banking transfers draining my private accounts to fund their Miami penthouse rental.
The smug expressions vanished from their faces instantly.
"These... these are out of context!" Chloe stammered, her voice pitching upward in panic. "Maya is just lazy! She wanted attention!"
"She was eleven days post-C-section, bleeding internally, and unable to walk," I roared, the suppressed fury finally breaking through my calm exterior. The sound made both women flinch violently back. "You locked her in a freezing apartment, stole her food, hid her medicine, and left her to die while you drank champagne in Florida!"
"We are your family!" my mother screamed, her mask of maternal grace completely shattering. "We gave you life! You owe us everything you have! That girl trapped you with a baby, and we were just trying to protect our inheritance!"
"Your inheritance?" I let out a dark, chilling laugh. "Let me make something crystal clear. Every single cent, every square foot of property, every car, and every account you think you own? It was all registered under my corporate shell companies. And as of five minutes ago..."

My phone chimed with a legal notification.
"...every single one of those assets has been frozen, seized, and repossessed."
