Chapter 13 - The Commission's VerdictThe private subterranean bunker beneath the estate was cold, smelling of damp earth and stale gunpowder.

Rico sat at the head of a massive oak table, bathed in the harsh, flickering glow of a single overhead bulb. His face was a mask of carved granite. Bound tightly to a metal chair in the center of the room was a middle-aged man in an expensive Italian suit—Salvatore "The Snake" Rossi, a senior capo of the New York Commission.
Dante stood guard near the door, his wound freshly stitched, while Clara stood right beside Rico’s chair, her hand resting reassuringly on the back of his seat.
"You made a mistake coming into my house, Salvatore," Rico said softly, spinning a heavy silver fountain pen between his long fingers.
Rossi spat a clot of blood onto the concrete floor, laughing hoarsely. "You think I'm the only one, Rico? You think the Commission likes seeing the great Moretti wrapped around the finger of some waitress? You've gone soft. You didn't wipe out the Russian docks last month. You're negotiating with the Chicago syndicate instead of bleeding them."
"I am securing a future," Rico replied, his voice chillingly calm. "Not running a slaughterhouse."
"A future?" Rossi sneered, his eyes darting maliciously toward Clara. "That girl is a liability. The other families know it. If you don't cut her loose, the entire Commission will vote to strip your title and execute your bloodline. Starting with the boy."
The air in the bunker plummeted to absolute zero.
Clara felt a cold shiver run down her spine, but before she could speak, Rico stood up. He didn't raise his voice. He didn't punch the table. He simply walked slowly around the oak furniture until he was standing inches away from Rossi.
"My son is off-limits," Rico whispered, leaning down so his face was level with the captive capo. "My wife is off-limits. And the Commission... can go to hell."
Rossi’s mocking smile faltered as he looked into Rico’s eyes and saw absolute, unadulterated void. There was no negotiation left.
"Dante," Rico said, turning his back on the prisoner. "Take him to the harbor. Feed the fishes."

"Wait!" Rossi panicked, thrashing against the ropes. "You can't do this! The Commission will declare war! Every caporegime from here to Boston will—"
"Let them try," Rico cut him off, walking back to Clara and taking her hand in his strong, warm grip. "My empire isn't built on fear anymore, Rossi. It's built on loyalty. And you just ran out of both."
