Chapter 14 - The Whisper in the DarkTwo days after Rossi’s disappearance, the tension in the compound was palpable. The underworld was a powder keg, and Rico had just struck the match.

Clara sat in the second-floor nursery, helping Leo build a towering fortress out of wooden blocks. The three-year-old was humming happily, his laughter a sweet antidote to the dark storm clouds gathering outside the estate gates.

The door creaked open, and Rico stepped inside. He looked exhausted, the weight of an impending war resting heavily on his broad shoulders. He knelt down beside his son, gently placing a final block on top of the tower.

"Good architecture, captain," Rico murmured, a faint smile touching his lips.

Leo giggled, patting his father's cheek with a sticky hand. "Papa stay?"

"Papa has to go away for a little while, buddy," Rico said softly, his voice thick with an uncharacteristic hesitation. He looked up, meeting Clara’s eyes across the room. "Just for a few hours. I need to meet with the remaining loyal capos at the Brooklyn docks to secure our perimeter before the Commission makes a move."

Clara’s stomach twisted. "Rico, it’s a trap. If Rossi's men are calling a meeting, they want you out in the open."

"I know," Rico admitted, standing up and walking over to her. He reached out, gently cupping her cheek with his warm palm. "That's why I'm leaving you and Leo inside the secure wing. The perimeter is locked down tighter than a vault. Dante and twenty loyal men are guarding every door."

"I didn't survive the streets of Brooklyn just to hide behind locked doors while my husband walks into a firing squad," Clara said fiercely, her eyes flashing with defiance.

Rico let out a soft, admiring sigh. "I love that about you. But my life belongs to this war. Yours and Leo's belong to the future."

Before Clara could argue further, Rico leaned down and kissed her deeply—a fierce, desperate, lingering kiss that tasted of danger and absolute devotion. Then, without looking back, he turned and walked out of the room.
