Chapter 7 - Into the FireClara stepped back from the door, her breath catching in her throat. She looked down at Leo, who was trembling violently in her arms, tears streaming down his face.

Think, Clara, think!

If she opened the door, they would both be dead within seconds. Maroni wanted to hurt Rico, and what better way to strike the Butcher of Brooklyn than by destroying his son?

She scanned the luxurious bedroom frantically. There was no other exit—or was there?

Her eyes landed on the massive, ornate fireplace carved from Italian marble. Behind the iron screen, the flue looked dark, but she remembered something Rico had mentioned in passing during a tour of the house earlier that week: Every historical room in this estate has old escape routes built into the architecture.

Without wasting another second, Clara ran to the fireplace. She pushed open the heavy iron screen, coughing as a cloud of ancient soot puffed out into the room. She knelt down, shining the flashlight app on her phone up into the dark brick chimney.

There was a narrow iron ladder leading straight up into the pitch-black vertical shaft.

Crash!

The heavy oak door of the suite splintered inward. The sound of splintering wood echoed like a gunshot through the room.

"Clear the room! Find the kid!" a rough voice shouted from the doorway.

Clara didn't hesitate. She shoved Leo up into the narrow brick shaft first. "Climb, Leo! Up the ladder, sweetheart, don't look down!"

Leo, terrified by the commotion, scrambled frantically up the iron rungs, his small hands finding purchase in the dark. Clara scrambled in right behind him, pulling the heavy iron fireplace screen back into place just as heavy footsteps thundered into the bedroom suite.

"She was just here! The bed's still warm!" a thug yelled, kicking over a nightstand that shattered against the floor.

Clara climbed upward through the suffocating darkness, the smell of dust and old soot filling her nose. Her knees scraped against the rough bricks, her hands burned from the cold iron rungs, but she pushed herself upward, keeping her eyes fixed on the small speck of light far above.

She was escaping a mafia ambush with the most dangerous toddler in New York—and she knew that if they were caught, there would be no second chances.
