Chapter 2 - The Shadow of the Past"Take your hands off him," Dante barked, stepping forward with heavy, threatening strides, his massive frame casting a dark shadow over Clara.

"Dante. Stop."
Rico’s command was a lethal whisper, but it carried the weight of an absolute decree. Dante froze mid-step, his jaw tightening as he glared daggers at the young waitress.
Rico slowly raised his hand, reaching up to touch his own cheek where Leo's small, sticky palm had rested. His fingers brushed against the smear of chocolate. For a man who lived in a world of absolute control, contamination of any kind was intolerable. Yet, as he looked down at his son—who had already turned back to bury his face safely in Clara’s neck—Rico felt an unfamiliar, hollow ache in his chest expand.
"You," Rico said, his eyes locking back onto Clara. "How did you do that?"
"I listened," Clara replied softly, shifting her weight slightly as her knees ached against the marble. "Children don't throw tantrums because they're bad, Mr. Moretti. They throw them because they're terrified. And right now, this restaurant looks like a war zone to him."
Marco scurried closer, sweating profusely through his silk tie. "Mr. Moretti, please, I am so sorry! The girl is new, she doesn't know her place—I’ll fire her right now, I'll throw her out into the alley—"
"Shut up, Marco," Rico growled, never breaking eye contact with Clara. He stood up from his chair. At six-foot-two, in his tailored Brioni suit, he looked like a monument carved out of winter ice. The entire room shrank away from him.
He walked around the table, his Italian leather shoes clicking softly against the floor. Dante hovered nervously nearby, his hand resting near his concealed firearm. Rico stopped just inches away from Clara and his son.
Leo whimpered softly, tightening his grip on Clara’s apron. Clara instinctively shielded the boy with her body, looking up at Rico with a fierce, protective defiance in her tired eyes.
Rico noticed that look. It was the same look Elena used to give him when he crossed lines he shouldn't have crossed.
"You're bleeding money in tips standing here, waitress," Rico said, his voice dropping an octave. "What's your full name?"
"Clara Vance. And I don't care about the tips."
"Brave words for someone working a double shift in a place owned by a man everyone in this city crosses the street to avoid," Rico noted, a dangerous, humorless smirk touching the corner of his lips. He reached out—not to grab Leo forcefully, but with a surprising gentleness that shocked his own security detail. He placed a large, calloused hand over his son's small back.
Leo flinched slightly at first, recognizing his father’s touch, but because Clara’s hand was still over his, he didn't pull away.
"He hasn't slept through the night in six months," Rico said quietly, the mask of the ruthless crime boss slipping just enough to reveal the shattered, exhausted father underneath. "He hasn't spoken a word since the drive-by. Every doctor in Manhattan told me he's traumatized, that time will heal it. Time is running out."
"Time doesn't heal anything if you're bleeding out in the dark," Clara said sharply, before she could stop herself.
Dante sucked in a sharp breath, waiting for Rico to draw his weapon and end her right there. But Rico only stared at her, the wheels in his brilliant, calculating mind turning rapidly. A man who controlled half the shipping ports on the East Coast knew a rare asset when he saw one.
"You're staying," Rico commanded, leaving no room for argument.
"Excuse me?" Clara blinked. "I have tables to clear—"
May you like
"You have one table tonight, Clara Vance," Rico interrupted, pulling a thick wad of crisp, hundred-dollar bills from his inner pocket and tossing it carelessly onto the ruined truffle risotto. It landed with a heavy thud. "You are now Leo’s private nanny for the rest of the evening. And if you walk away, Marco will find out what happens to people who break contracts with the Moretti family."
Before Clara could protest, Leo let out a soft yawn, his heavy eyelids fluttering shut as the rhythmic patter of Clara's fingers on his back finally lulled him into a deep, peaceful sleep against her shoulder.
