Chapter 11 - The Locked-Box SecretThe gavel had barely finished echoing through the Santa Esperanza Federal District courtroom when federal agents intercepted an automated electronic transmission originating from Victor Thorne’s holding cell.

Back at the FBI field office, Agent Miller slammed a hardcopy printout onto the briefing table in front of Marcus and Isabella.

"We thought arresting Victor and sentencing him to life without parole ended the threat," Agent Miller said gravely, running a hand through his thinning gray hair. "We were wrong. Victor had a dead-man’s switch programmed into a secure dark-web server offshore. The moment his trial concluded with a guilty verdict, a secondary protocol activated."

Isabella leaned over the table, her eyes scanning the complex code strings and encrypted financial ledgers on the paper. "What protocol? Who else is involved?"

"The Syndicate of the Thorn," Miller replied, pointing to a stylized emblem on the printout. "Victor wasn't the head of the snake. He was just a regional operative. The real mastermind is an international trafficking cartel known as the Obsidian Network, and they've just placed a multi-million-dollar bounty on the person who dismantled their operation—you, Isabella."

Marcus stepped forward, his jaw tight with cold fury. "They won't get within a mile of her. We increase security around the estate immediately."

"Increasing security won't be enough this time, Mr. Vance," Miller warned. "They aren't sending local thugs. They're sending professional ghost-operatives."
