Chapter 1 - The Stranger in the Bentley

The Bentley didn't just stop; it anchored beside me like a judgment. The interior light flickered on, revealing rich cocoa leather and the faint scent of old money and cedarwood. The elderly man with the silver hair—Arthur Vance—didn't look away when I tried to wipe the smeared mascara from my cheeks.

"You're freezing," he said, his voice gravelly and authoritative. "And you're standing in front of a shuttered boutique at nine o'clock at night with a single suitcase. Get in."

"I'm fine," I lied, my teeth chattering so violently the words clipped together.

"Clara Whitmore," he murmured, reading the luggage tag dangling from my battered leather handle before I could tuck it away. "Raymond's wife. Or rather, his ex-wife, judging by the legal envelope sticking out of your pocket."

My blood ran cold. "You know Raymond?"

May you like

"I know everyone who matters in Greenwich," Arthur replied, his sharp eyes finally shifting to my trembling hand resting instinctively over my lower abdomen. "And I know a man throwing away a diamond while picking up glass. Get in the car, Clara. Outside is no place for a mother protecting her future."

My breath hitched. Protecting her future. Did he know? No, he couldn't. It was impossible. Yet, as the chauffeur stepped out into the freezing March wind and opened the door for me, I felt an invisible current pulling me forward. I slid into the plush leather, leaving the bitter wind and eleven years of ghosts behind.
