Chapter 26 - The Quiet Evening

The gala ended long past midnight. By the time our private armored motorcade pulled through the iron gates of Vance Manor, the estate was bathed in the soft, tranquil glow of moonlight reflecting off the crashing Atlantic waves.

Inside the nursery, the house was profoundly peaceful. Liam, Leo, and Lily were fast asleep in their custom beds, breathing in a slow, rhythmic cadence that anchored my soul to the earth. I walked quietly from room to room, pulling up a blanket here, adjusting a stuffed animal there, savoring the simple, sacred miracle of motherhood that had once been denied to me for so long.

When I finally retreated to my private study, I found Arthur sitting by the fireplace, nursing a small glass of cognac.

"You were magnificent tonight, Clara," Arthur said, looking up as I entered. "The world is finally seeing what I saw in you that freezing night outside the Greenwich boutique."

I smiled, sinking into the leather armchair opposite him. "You took a massive risk on me, Arthur. A desperate, broke woman standing in the snow with a single suitcase and a secret she couldn't even name."

"I didn't take a risk on a desperate woman," Arthur corrected gently, swirling the golden liquid in his glass. "I recognized a survivor who refused to let her story be written by someone else."

I looked down at my hands, tracing the faint, invisible scars of a decade of medical trauma, fertility treatments, and psychological warfare. Those scars weren't marks of weakness anymore; they were battle honors.

"What do we do tomorrow?" I asked softly.

Arthur smiled, a warm, knowing twinkle in his eye. "Tomorrow, my dear, we wake up, we make breakfast for three very energetic toddlers, and we let the rest of the world catch up."
