Chapter 19 - The Ultimatum in the Dark

The barrel of the tactical operative's rifle was pointed directly at the center of the room, mere feet from the cribs where my babies were beginning to stir and whimper at the noise.

My grip on my sidearm tightened. Every instinct in my body screamed to fire, to empty the magazine into the masked intruder. But the tactical math was impossible: if I moved an inch, the operative could pull the trigger faster than human reflexes could stop him.

"Chloe," I said, my voice dangerously steady, carrying a chilling, lethal calm that made even the tactical operative hesitate. "You are completely insane. Breaking into a federal-protected estate? You aren't executing a leveraged buyout—you're committing high treason and kidnapping."

Chloe laughed, a shrill, unhinged sound that echoed off the nursery walls. "Treason? Kidnapping? Oh, Clara, you still don't understand how the real world works. This isn't a courtroom. There are no judges here. There are no clever lawyers to save you. There is only power—and right now, I hold the gun."

She stepped closer, peering over the edge of the nearest white crib at little Lily, who was rubbing her sleepy eyes, looking around in confusion.

"Such pretty little heirs," Chloe mocked, reaching out a gloved hand toward Lily's blanket.

"Don't you dare touch my daughter," I snarled, taking a sharp step forward, raising my sidearm directly at Chloe's forehead.

The masked operative instantly pivoted his rifle barrel toward my chest. "Drop it, Mrs. Vance-Sinclair. Last warning."

"Let her touch them," a cold, smooth voice echoed from the shattered doorway.

Viktor Vance stepped out of the shadows of the hallway, wearing an immaculate charcoal overcoat, unfazed by the chaos, carrying a leather briefcase in his left hand. He looked around the nursery with clinical detachment, as if inspecting real estate.

"Viktor," I hissed, keeping my weapon steady despite the operative's rifle. "You're playing a game you've already lost. Arthur Vance's private tactical unit triggered the federal silent alarm the moment your men breached the perimeter gates. You have less than three minutes before elite federal marshals and state police lock down every square mile of this coastline."

Viktor didn't flinch. He smiled calmly, walking slowly into the room. "Let them come, Clara. By the time federal reinforcements clear the outer gates, we will be boarding a private chopper waiting on your private helipad. All we need is your signature on a simple, pre-prepared asset transfer agreement."

He tossed the leather briefcase onto the rocking chair. It popped open automatically, revealing a thick stack of legal papers and a golden fountain pen.

"Sign the trust over to our Swiss syndicate, and your children remain untouched," Viktor said smoothly. "Refuse, and my associate permanently removes any future claimants to the estate."

I looked down at the papers, then up at Chloe's manic grin, and finally at the masked operative's finger resting lightly on the trigger.

For eleven years, I had been cornered. For eleven years, I had been told what to do, where to stand, and when to weep. But this wasn't a marriage. This wasn't a boardroom. This was my blood.

"You think you've won," I whispered, a strange, terrifying smile spreading across my lips.

Viktor frowned, a flicker of unease crossing his calculating eyes. "What are you smiling about?"

"Because," I said softly, cocking the hammer of my sidearm with a sharp, echoing click, "you made one fatal calculation error."

May you like

"And what is that?" Viktor scoffed.

"You assumed Arthur Vance only had one tactical unit."
