Chapter 18 - The Breach at Vance Manor

The storm hit the New York coastline on a freezing Saturday night in mid-December. Gale-force winds whipped the Atlantic waves against the jagged cliffs surrounding Vance Manor, howling through the sprawling estate like a chorus of ghosts.
Inside the nursery, the house was warm and quiet. The nurses had put Liam, Leo, and Lily down for the night, their rhythmic, synchronized breathing filling the air with a profound sense of peace. I sat in my study down the hall, reviewing architectural blueprints for the upcoming expansion of the Sinclair-Vance Children’s Hospital, a cup of chamomile tea cooling on the desk beside me.
Suddenly, every light in the mansion flickered violently and went completely black.
Emergency generators kicked in three seconds later, bathing the corridors in a dim, amber backup glow. But before I could even stand up from my desk, the secure intercom system on the wall emitted a sharp, ear-piercing alarm.
Code Red. Perimeter breach at Sector Four. Armed intruders.
My blood turned to ice. I didn't hesitate. I threw open my desk drawer, drew a specialized, biometric-locked sidearm Arthur had insisted I keep for personal defense, and sprinted down the corridor toward the nursery.
As I reached the double doors of the children's wing, the sound of shattered glass echoed from the courtyard below. Gunshots popped—dull, suppressed thuds muffled by the raging storm outside. Private security guards were engaging hostile forces in the grand foyer.
I burst into the nursery. The two night nurses were huddled in the corner, shielding the cribs with their own bodies.
"Clara!" nurse Sarah cried out, her face pale with terror. "They came through the cliffside conservatory! There are at least four of them!"
"Lock the reinforced panic shutter," I commanded, my voice ice-cold, stripped of all fear, replaced by the primal fury of a mother protecting her young.
Before Sarah could press the wall-mounted steel override button, the nursery door flew off its heavy brass hinges with a deafening crash.

A masked operative in tactical black gear stepped through the splintered wood, holding an assault rifle. Behind him stepped Chloe Vance, her face twisted in a psychotic grin, wearing a fur-lined winter coat that looked entirely out of place in a war zone.
"Well, well, well," Chloe purred, stepping over the shattered doorframe, her eyes gleaming with manic triumph. "Look at the fallen queen in her castle. Drop the weapon, Clara, or I swear to God my associate will turn this entire room into a graveyard."
