Chapter 8 - The Ultimatum

With the court ruling heavily in our favor, Arthur Vance called for a final closed-door settlement meeting at the Vance Tower penthouse overlooking Central Park.
Only four people sat around the glass conference table: Arthur, myself, Raymond, and Margaret.
"Here are your terms," Arthur said, sliding a thick document across the glass. "Raymond steps down permanently as CEO of Whitmore Industries. All voting shares transfer immediately to the unborn heirs, managed by a neutral trust board headed by myself and Clara. Margaret vacates the family estate within forty-eight hours."
Margaret slammed her hand on the table, her face purple with fury. "This is robbery! You're stripping us of our legacy! We built this company!"
"Your grandfather built it on loans from my father, Margaret," Arthur corrected coldly. "And your son gambled it away on arrogance and cruelty. You treated Clara like an object. Now, you pay the price."
Raymond stared at the papers, his hands shaking. He looked up at me, his eyes brimming with genuine, pathetic tears. "Clara... please. Is this what you wanted? Vengeance? Destroying my life?"
"Vengeance implies I spent my time plotting against you, Raymond," I said softly, leaning back in my leather chair. "I didn't. I walked away with one suitcase, three babies, and my dignity. You destroyed your own life the moment you handed me divorce papers while drinking wine with another woman."
"Sign it, Raymond," Arthur commanded, sliding a gold pen across the table. "Or face federal indictment for corporate embezzlement of subsidiary funds—charges we uncovered while auditing your accounts last week."

Raymond swallowed hard, closed his eyes, and signed his name in shaky, defeated strokes.
Margaret let out a low, agonizing sob, collapsing back into her chair as the Whitmore dynasty slipped forever through her fingers.
