Footsteps crunched softly behind me on the gravel.
"Mommy!" three small, joyous voices rang out in unison.
I turned around just in time to catch a flurry of flying limbs as Liam, Leo, and Lily launched themselves at me in a chaotic, giggling pile of hugs that nearly knocked me off balance.
"Careful, my little explorers!" I laughed, dropping to my knees and wrapping my arms around all three of them, burying my face in their soft hair, breathing in the scent of sunshine and grass. "You're going to knock me right into the rosebushes."
Arthur stood a few paces away, leaning against his obsidian cane, watching us with a serene, deeply contented smile.

"Let them run it," I smiled, looking down at my children's bright, fearless eyes—eyes that held no shadows, no generational trauma, and no inherited curses. "They'll do a much better job than the people who came before us."
