Chapter 14 - The Hudson Valley RetreatThe cabin we rented sat perched on a quiet wooded hill overlooking a glassy, mirror-flat lake in upstate New York. Tall pine trees surrounded the property, their sweet, resinous scent filling the crisp morning air as the first hints of autumn began to paint the canopy in shades of gold and amber.

For three days, the modern world ceased to exist.
We left our phones locked in the glove compartment of the car. There were no push notifications, no banking alerts, no legal briefs, and no tabloids.
On Saturday afternoon, I carried Liam down to the wooden dock while Maya sat on a picnic blanket spread across the emerald grass, sketching the rugged outline of the distant mountains.
"Look at the water, big guy," I whispered, holding Liam securely against my chest as he reached out with chubby little hands to grab a floating autumn leaf. "This is what quiet feels like."
Liam let out a happy gurgle, kicking his little sneakers against my jacket.
Maya walked down the wooden planks of the dock, her bare feet making soft padding sounds against the weathered wood, and leaned her head against my shoulder.
"Do you ever look back and think about how close we came to losing everything?" she asked softly, her eyes reflecting the blue expanse of the lake.
"I think about it every day," I answered honestly, turning to wrap my free arm around her waist. "Not because I’m afraid of the past anymore, but because it reminds me of what truly matters. On New Year's Eve, I came home expecting to find a family. Instead, I found out I was living with parasites. But out of that ash heap, we built a real home."
Maya smiled, a deep, radiant expression of pure peace.

"We survived the storm, David," she murmured, kissing my cheek. "And now, the weather is clear."
That evening, as the sun set behind the jagged tree line, painting the sky in violent shades of violet and orange, we built a crackling fire in the stone hearth of the cabin. We roasted marshmallows, listened to the gentle hum of the night crickets, and watched Liam sleep soundly in his portable crib, safe, warm, and deeply loved.
