The tabloids found new scandals to chase, and our names disappeared from the front pages of the New York Post.

However, closure rarely arrives without a final, lingering echo.

On a bitterly cold Monday morning, a formal legal notice arrived in my physical mailbox bearing the official seal of the New York State Department of Corrections. It wasn't another frivolous lawsuit or a plea for mercy. It was an estate transfer document.

Following Eleanor’s stroke and subsequent medical deterioration in the prison infirmary, the state had initiated a formal inventory of her remaining personal property—the last remaining remnants of her once-pretentious high-society life. Her designer coats, costume jewelry, and a small savings account containing roughly twelve thousand dollars were designated for liquidation to cover unpaid prison medical fees and court-ordered restitution.

At the bottom of the document was a handwritten note from the prison warden:

“Mr. Sterling, your mother refused legal counsel regarding her final personal effects. She left one specific instruction concerning the remaining balance of her personal bank account.”

I opened the attached bank check. It was made out directly to Liam Sterling’s College Trust Fund in the exact amount of $12,450.00.

Attached to the check was a small slip of paper written in a weak, shaky, barely legible cursive—Eleanor’s final handwriting:

“Buy him something warm. I’m sorry.”
