Chapter 6 - The Freezing Return to Park SlopeThree days later, the discharge papers were signed.

I packed our belongings into a duffel bag, dressed Liam in the thick thermal clothes I had originally brought back from Germany, and carefully helped Maya into a wheelchair. The Brooklyn winter was still bitter, the wind howling off the Atlantic and whipping through the brownstone-lined streets of Park Slope, but as we pulled up to our apartment building in a private medical transport car, the atmosphere felt entirely different.
The heavy, suffocating dread that had gripped our home on New Year’s Eve was gone.
I unlocked the front door and pushed it open. The apartment was still chilly, but I immediately cranked the smart thermostat up to 75 degrees and plugged in two high-powered space heaters in the living room.
While Maya rested comfortably on the sofa with Liam nestled against her chest, I went straight to the kitchen.
The refrigerator was still empty—the lingering reminder of my mother’s cruel theft—so I grabbed my coat and walked down the block to the local organic market. I loaded two shopping carts to the brim: prime ribeye steaks, fresh organic salmon, bone broths, organic berries, imported Greek yogurt, vitamins, and three massive tins of Liam’s specialized prescription formula.
When I returned, I began cooking. The rich, savory aroma of slow-simmered garlic broth and seared steak filled the apartment, banishing the ghostly chill of the past few days.
As I set a steaming bowl of nourishing beef broth and fresh vegetables on the low wooden table in front of Maya, she looked up at me with tears shimmering in her eyes.
"David... you didn't have to go all out," she said softly.
"I didn't go all out. I just did what I should have done from the very beginning," I said, sitting down beside her and wrapping my arm around her shoulders. "Eat. You need to regain your strength."
As Maya slowly sipped the broth, color returning to her cheeks, my phone buzzed on the table.
It was an email from my corporate lawyer in Manhattan, complete with attached legal documents:
Notice of Eviction and Property Seizure for the Suburban Residence.
Freezing and Liquidation Order of Joint Bank Accounts.

Formal Restraining Orders prohibiting Eleanor, Chloe, and Mark from coming within 500 yards of our residence, our hospital, or our child.
I read through the summary, hit Forward to Detective Miller, and locked my phone screen for good.
