Chapter 5 - The Hospital Room ReunionBack in Brooklyn, the winter sunlight filtered weakly through the blinds of Maya’s hospital room. I was sitting in the armchair beside her bed, gently rocking Liam in my arms, watching him sleep with rhythmic, peaceful breaths.

Maya stirred, her eyelids fluttering open. For a second, a look of blind panic crossed her face, her hand instinctively flying toward her stomach.

"Maya. I’m right here," I said softly, leaning over to kiss her hand.

She blinked, focusing on my face, and then looked around the sterile white room. Tears welled in her eyes again, but this time, the hunted, terrified look in her gaze was gone.

"Are we... are we safe?" she whispered, her voice still raspy.

"You’re completely safe," I assured her, squeezing her fingers gently. "And so is Liam. The doctors said your infection was caught just in time. You’re going to make a full recovery."

"What... what about your mother?" Maya asked hesitantly, fear still lingering in the corners of her heart. "Did you... did you talk to them?"

I pulled my phone from my pocket and unlocked the screen, holding it up so she could see a notification alert from Detective Miller.

“Extradition paperwork filed. All three suspects in custody in Miami, awaiting transfer to Brooklyn 78th Precinct. Bank freeze and asset forfeiture hearings scheduled for Tuesday morning.”

Maya stared at the screen for a long, silent moment. Then, slowly, a massive weight seemed to lift from her shoulders. She let out a long, shuddering breath, and a weak, beautiful smile finally touched her lips.

"You didn't let them bully you," she whispered, looking up at me with profound relief and adoration.

"I let them walk all over us for years because I thought keeping the peace mattered more than protecting my own family," I said, my voice thick with emotion as I looked down at our son. "That ends today, Maya. From now on, it’s just the three of us. No leeches, no abusers, no excuses."

Just then, the door of the hospital room clicked open.

Dr. Vance walked in holding a clipboard, flanked by a hospital social worker and a police liaison officer.

"Good morning, Mr. Sterling, Mrs. Sterling," the doctor said with a warm, encouraging smile. "I have wonderful news. Maya’s lab results from this morning show the infection markers are dropping rapidly. If she continues to rest and respond to the IV antibiotics, we can look at discharging her home by the end of the week."

"Thank you, Doctor," I said, standing up to shake his hand.

"There’s one more thing," the police liaison added, stepping forward with a folder in hand. "Detective Miller asked me to drop this off. It’s the preliminary docket for the arraignment hearing tomorrow morning. Your mother and sister’s defense attorneys have already tried to contact the precinct claiming it’s a 'family misunderstanding,' but given the video evidence and medical records, the District Attorney is moving forward with felony charges of reckless endangerment and elder/child neglect without bail."

Maya looked at me, her eyes steady and resolute.

"I’ll testify," she said clearly. "Every word of it."
