Chapter 18 - The AnniversaryDecember 31st, 2026.

Exactly one year to the day since I had unlocked our front door unannounced, smelling the stale air, finding the empty refrigerator, and carrying my freezing wife and starving newborn out into the Manhattan snow.
This year, our Park Slope apartment told a completely different story.
The living room was illuminated by the warm, twinkling glow of a magnificent Christmas tree draped in golden lights and silver ornaments. A massive festive spread covered the dining table: roasted prime rib, fresh artisanal bread, expensive cheeses, and platters of celebratory food.
Liam, now walking and babbling with boundless toddler energy, toddled across the hardwood floor chasing a shiny red balloon while Maya’s parents watched him with beaming smiles.
At 11:30 PM, Maya walked over to me, wrapping her arms around my waist as I stood by the window looking out over the quiet, snowy Brooklyn street.
"One year," Maya whispered softly, resting her head against my chest.
"One year," I repeated, wrapping my arms tightly around her, burying my face in her fragrant hair.
"Do you remember what you were doing at this exact minute last year?" she asked, a playful, loving smile touching her lips.
"I remember breaking down a door in my own mind," I answered honestly. "And finding out that the most precious things in my life were right in front of me, waiting to be saved."
Outside, across the East River, the first brilliant flashes of New Year’s fireworks began to bloom against the dark Manhattan skyline, showering the night sky in vibrant colors of gold, emerald, and ruby.

We didn't look at our phones. We didn't check our bank accounts. We didn't care who was in Miami or who was behind bars.
Maya and I leaned in and shared a deep, passionate, unhurried kiss as the countdown to a brand new year echoed faintly from the television in the background.
