Chapter 10 - The Quiet AftermathBy late afternoon, the media frenzy outside the front gates had quieted down, replaced by the steady hum of snowplows clearing the neighborhood streets. Federal agents had finished processing the estate's study, and the temporary police tape had been removed from the perimeter.

Evelyn sat by the fireplace with a fresh cup of coffee, watching the golden embers glow in the hearth. The house was warm, quiet, and filled with the gentle, easy laughter of her children playing in the den.

Her phone buzzed on the coffee table.

It was an alert from a legal news app: FORMER BELLAMY HOLDINGS EXECUTIVE ARRAIGNED ON MULTIPLE COUNTS OF WIRE FRAUD AND EMBEZZLEMENT.

Evelyn didn't even bother to open the notification. She simply swiped the screen dark, tossing the phone back onto the wooden table with a soft, dismissive thud.

She walked over to the grand mirror in the foyer—the very mirror where Grant had stood hours earlier, terrified of the reflection of his own collapsing empire. Evelyn stared at her own reflection. She saw a woman with steady eyes, a calm posture, and a heart completely unburdened by the past.

She had spent years believing that keeping a family together meant enduring the unendurable, swallowing her voice, and protecting a man who saw her as nothing more than a convenient prop in his corporate performance. But as she adjusted the collar of her sweater and listened to the sound of her children laughing in the other room, she knew the ultimate truth of that Christmas morning.
