Chapter 3 - Unraveling the EmpireThe living room had transformed into a silent war zone. Grant’s parents sat rigid on the floral-print sofa, staring into space as if the last ten minutes had erased decades of family pride. Martha’s hands trembled as she clutched her handkerchief, while Grant’s father, Richard, stared fixedly at the floor, his face drained of all color.

Celeste had retreated to the far corner near the window, clutching her designer coat like a shield. The two silver gifts she had brought for Lily and Noah lay abandoned on the rug, trampled slightly by the commotion. No one looked at her. No one spoke to her. She had come here expecting to step into the role of the new matriarch, only to find herself trapped in the debris of a collapsing empire.

"Arthur," Richard managed to cough out, his voice cracked and old. "Is... is the board really going to strip him of his title?"

Arthur Bell didn't look back from where he stood by the fireplace, watching the winter storm rage outside. "Richard, your son didn't just bend compliance rules. He drained our secondary R&D reserves to fund a lavish lifestyle, luxury apartments, and corporate hush-money payouts. Under normal circumstances, we would handle this internally. But given the legal exposure and Evelyn’s proactive filings... Grant is facing federal wire fraud charges."

"Federal?" Claire gasped, covering her mouth with both hands. She looked over at Evelyn, her eyes wide with a mixture of terror and desperate appeal. "Evelyn... please. You can't let them do this. He’s your husband! Think of the children! What will Lily and Noah think when their father goes to prison?"

Evelyn turned slowly from the kitchen counter, where she was pouring herself a fresh cup of coffee. The steam rose in a delicate spiral between them.

"Claire," Evelyn said, her voice calm, measured, and utterly unyielding. "Where was your concern for my children when Grant brought his mistress into our home on Christmas morning while they were still sitting in their pajamas?"

Claire opened her mouth, but no words came out.

"Where was your concern for our family," Evelyn continued, stepping closer, "when Grant spent the last three years treating our marriage like a convenient PR facade while draining our children's college funds to buy penthouse apartments for women he picked up at corporate retreats?"

"Evelyn is right," a small, sharp voice cut through the room.

Everyone turned. Noah was standing in the doorway of the hallway, his astronomy book clutched tightly against his chest. His young face was set with a maturity that no child should ever have to wear.

"I don't care what happens to him," Noah said, his voice steady. "He lied to us. And he brought her here."

Lily stepped up beside her brother, slipping her small hand into his. She looked at her father, who had just walked back into the living room, his tie loosened, his hair disheveled, looking like a man drowning in slow motion.

"We want to stay with Mom," Lily said clearly. "We don't want him here anymore."

Grant stumbled backward, hitting the edge of the mahogany bookshelf. The books rattled against the wood. He looked at his children—the very people he claimed to have built his empire for—and saw absolute, unadulterated rejection.
