Chapter 12 - The Quiet HouseBack on the estate, the atmosphere was light, airy, and entirely transformed.

The heavy velvet curtains in the living room were pulled wide open, allowing the bright afternoon sunlight to stream across the polished oak floors. The lingering chill of the morning had been chased away by a roaring fire in the stone hearth, and the scent of cinnamon and fresh coffee drifted from the kitchen.
Evelyn sat at the mahogany dining table, reviewing a thick stack of finalized digital documents on her tablet. Her posture was relaxed, her expression serene. For the first time in over a decade, she wasn't jumping at the sound of a closing door or second-guessing whether her tone of voice would provoke an outburst.
Rebecca Shaw sat across from her, closing a sleek leather portfolio with a satisfied click.
"Well, Evelyn, that wraps up the asset freezing and immediate injunctions," Rebecca said, offering a rare, genuine smile. "The temporary restraining order is fully active. Grant cannot approach you, the children, or the property within a five-mile radius. If he violates it even once while out on future bail hearings, it's an immediate return to maximum security detention."
"Thank you, Rebecca," Evelyn said, looking up with profound gratitude. "I know this was expedited because of the holidays, but your team's precision was extraordinary."
"It wasn't my precision," Rebecca replied smoothly, standing up and buttoning her wool coat. "It was your preparation. You spent six months quietly gathering financial statements while he was busy entertaining mistresses. Most people in your position fold under pressure. You built a fortress."
"Survival requires architecture," Evelyn murmured softly.
Just then, Lily and Noah walked into the dining room, carrying a tray of warm chocolate chip cookies they had baked with the help of the electric mixer Grant had complained was a waste of counter space years ago.
"Mom, Rebecca, do you want one?" Noah asked, holding the plate out proudly. "We didn't burn a single one."
Evelyn reached out, taking a warm cookie and smiling at her son. "They look perfect, sweetie. Go ahead and take some to the kitchen. We're going to watch a movie tonight—whatever you two want to watch."

Lily’s eyes lit up. "Can we watch Star Wars? Dad always said it was too loud for the living room."
Evelyn felt a quiet, powerful swell of liberation in her chest. "Put it on the big screen, Lily. As loud as you want."
