Chapter 4 - The Final Asset"You can't do this to me."

Grant’s voice cracked as he stared at his own flesh and blood. He looked desperate, pathetic, stripping away every layer of the confident, charismatic corporate titan he had spent a decade performing for the world.

"This house is mine," Grant muttered, his eyes darting frantically around the room. "I bought it. I put the down payment on this estate before we were even married. The deed is in my name—or under the corporate holding trust. You can't throw me out!"

Rebecca Shaw stepped forward, holding a single, laminated legal document. A faint, knowing smile touched the edges of her lips.

"Actually, Grant, you made a very interesting clerical error back in March of last year," Rebecca said clearly, her voice echoing in the tense silence. "When you restructured your primary assets to shield them from potential liability—ironically, trying to protect yourself from future business lawsuits—you executed a quitclaim deed transferring full ownership of this estate, along with all primary residential holdings, into an irrevocable family trust."

Grant blinked. "That trust names me as the primary beneficiary—"

"It did," Rebecca interrupted smoothly, tapping the bottom corner of the page. "Until three weeks ago, when you signed the amendment granting sole trusteeship and executive veto power to your primary spouse in the event of documented financial misconduct or breach of marital fidelity. Signed, witnessed, and notarized."

Grant froze. His mouth opened slightly, but no sound came out. He stared at the signature at the bottom of the page—his own immaculate handwriting, dashed off in a rush during a late night at his office when Evelyn had calmly handed him a stack of papers and told him it was standard tax restructuring.

"You... you tricked me," Grant whispered, the realization hitting him like a physical blow to the chest.

"I didn't trick you, Grant," Evelyn replied softly, taking a sip of her coffee. "I simply gave you enough rope to build your own gallows. You were too busy managing your double life to read the fine print."

Across the room, Celeste let out a sharp, hysterical laugh. It was a high, jagged sound that made everyone turn. She stood up, smoothing down her designer skirt with shaking hands, her face twisted into a mask of pure fury.

"You're a fool, Grant," Celeste spat, glaring at the man she had spent the last eight months believing was a billionaire mastermind. "You told me your divorce was final. You told me Evelyn was just a roommate you were waiting to buy out. You lied to me too!"

Grant looked at her, his eyes wild with desperation. "Celeste, wait—don't listen to them, we can still—"

"Stay away from me!" Celeste screamed, shrinking back as he took a step toward her. She grabbed her designer handbag from the floor, leaving the two silver-wrapped Christmas gifts behind on the rug. "I am done with you. I am done with this fake life, and I am certainly not going down for your federal crimes!"

Without another word, Celeste turned on her heel, pushed past Iris and Arthur in the foyer, and slammed the front door behind her, vanishing into the swirling snowstorm outside.
