Chapter 16 - The Interrogation RoomUnder the harsh fluorescent lights of the federal holding facility, Grant sat slumped across a stainless-steel table. Two federal investigators sat opposite him, their expressions bored, professional, and entirely unimpressed by his attempts at corporate intimidation.

"Mr. Monroe, let's not waste each other's time," Agent Miller said, sliding a thick file folder across the table and flipping it open to a series of wire transfer logs. "We have the bank records from the Cayman Islands branch. We have the digital signatures matching your corporate IP address. And we have Iris Chen's full testimony detailing how you coerced her into doctoring quarterly compliance reports."
Grant tried to puff out his chest, attempting to summon the boardroom authority that had served him for years. "I am a senior executive. I have legal representation—"
"Your legal representation from Vance & Sterling formally dropped you twenty minutes ago," Agent Miller interrupted smoothly. "They cited an immediate conflict of interest regarding corporate asset protection and fraud collusion."
Grant froze. The artificial bravado drained out of him instantly, leaving behind a pale, hollow shell of a man. "Dropped me? They can't do that. I brought millions in accounts to that firm!"
"You brought a federal criminal investigation to their doorstep," the second agent chimed in, tossing a printed photograph onto the table. It was a picture of the shell company registration document bearing a forged signature. "This carries a maximum federal sentence of twenty years, Mr. Monroe. Unless, of course, you're willing to cooperate and provide information on any co-conspirators in the secondary corporate syndicates."

Grant stared at the photograph. His mind raced frantically, searching for someone to blame, someone to drag down with him, someone who could save him from the abyss. But there was no one left. He had alienated his parents, betrayed his wife, abandoned his children, and thrown his mistress under the bus.
He was entirely, utterly alone.
