Chapter 13 - Celeste's AwakeningAcross town, inside a sleek but sterile high-rise apartment overlooking the frozen city skyline, Celeste Monroe—or rather, Celeste Turner, as her legal documents actually read—poured herself a glass of expensive red wine with violently shaking hands.

Her designer handbag sat open on the marble island, spilling out unopened mail, unreturned jewelry receipts from Grant, and a half-empty cosmetic bag.

Her phone buzzed aggressively on the counter. It was a text message from an unknown number: THE POLICE HAVE CONFISCATED GRANT'S ACCOUNTS. ALL ASSETS FROZEN. IF YOU RECEIVED GIFTS PURCHASED WITH EMBEZZLED FUNDS, RETURN THEM TO THE RECEIVERSHIP IMMEDIATELY.

Celeste let out a choked, hysterical gasp, dropping her wine glass. The crystal shattered against the tile floor, sending dark red liquid spreading like a stain across the white marble.

"Damn him," she hissed, tears of pure fury stinging her eyes.

She had spent eight months playing the role of the devoted, sophisticated mistress, believing Grant was a billionaire master of the universe who would eventually divorce his quiet wife and crown her queen of his empire. She had endured his late-night calls, his disappearing weekends, his empty promises of a penthouse in Manhattan—all for nothing.

Worse still, her name was now quietly circulating in internal compliance reports at Bellamy Holdings as a secondary beneficiary of shell company expenditures. Federal investigators were already looking into the luxury lease on her apartment—a lease that Grant had paid for using embezzled R&D funds.

She walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window, looking down at the street below. There were no reporters outside her building yet, but she knew it was only a matter of time before her association with Grant Monroe dragged her entire professional reputation into the mud.

Her phone rang. It was her mother.

Celeste stared at the screen, letting it ring out until it went dark. She had no empire. She had no billionaire boyfriend. She had a mountain of legal liability and a ruined reputation, all because she had hitched her wagon to a man whose house of cards was built entirely on sand.
