Chapter 2 - The Anatomy of a Traitor"You set me up."

Grant’s voice was barely a whisper, a low, venomous hiss as he cornered Evelyn against the French doors leading to the back patio. The rest of the family had retreated to the living room under Arthur’s stern, authoritative direction, leaving the foyer as a battleground. Iris and Rebecca stood near the entryway, while Arthur observed like a judge ready to hand down a death sentence.

"Set you up?" Evelyn tilted her head, her gaze steady, devoid of any fear or hesitation. She looked at the man she had loved for twelve years—the man who had built an empire on lies, infidelity, and financial fraud—and felt only profound, cleansing emptiness. "Grant, I didn't spend a single cent of your stolen money. I didn't forge your signature on those shell company documents. You did that all by yourself because your greed outgrew your intelligence."

Grant’s fingers grazed the glass pane behind her. For a terrifying second, the illusion of his untouchable power vanished, replaced by the panicked desperation of a cornered animal.

"If I go down, I'm taking everything," he muttered, his eyes narrowing into slits. "The house, the accounts, the custody of the kids—I'll drag your name through the mud so fast the courts won't know what hit them. I'll make sure you leave this house with nothing more than the clothes on your back."

From the edge of the hallway, a crisp, professional voice intervened.

"I wouldn't recommend that, Mr. Monroe," Rebecca said, walking forward with a tablet in her hand. She tapped the screen, turning it toward Grant. "As of 8:00 AM this morning, a freezing injunction was issued by the Superior Court on all joint and individual corporate assets. Furthermore, your personal accounts have been locked due to suspicious international wire transfers routed through the Cayman Islands—transfers authorized by you, but documented meticulously by Ms. Chen."

Grant stared at Iris with pure, unfiltered hatred. "You bitch. I gave you everything. I bought your silence."

Iris stood tall, her chin held high, the pale tint of her skin replaced by a fierce, vindictive flush. "You bought my compliance while you threatened to ruin my career, Grant. But Evelyn found me first. She showed me what loyalty actually looks like—and she offered me protection from the wreckage you were inevitably going to pull down on top of all of us."

"You think you've won?" Grant laughed, a desperate, broken sound that echoed off the high ceilings. He looked back at Evelyn, his expression twisting into something ugly. "You think these people care about you? Arthur Bell only cares about his stock price! The moment this scandal hits the press, Bellamy Holdings will tear you apart right alongside me!"

Evelyn smiled. It was a cold, beautiful smile that completely shattered what little composure he had left.

"Let them try, Grant," she whispered, stepping past him into the living room. "I’ve already sold the company shares I owned in my own name. The divorce papers are filed. And the press? Well... I believe Rebecca invited a very specific investigative journalist to meet us at the front gate at nine o'clock."

The grandfather clock in the hallway struck 8:45 AM.

Fifteen minutes. That was all the time Grant had left before his perfect life became front-page news.
