Chapter 17 - A New Morning RoutineThe sun rose over the snow-draped suburbs the following morning, casting a brilliant, crystal-clear golden light across the neighborhood.

Inside the estate, the house was waking up to a rhythm entirely its own. There was no rush to prepare for a pretentious family brunch to impress visiting in-laws who judged every detail. There was no tension in the air.

Evelyn walked into the kitchen in a comfortable cashmere sweater, brewing a fresh pot of dark roast coffee. The aroma filled the open-concept space, rich and grounding.

Through the window, she watched the local snowplow clear the final drift from the driveway. The gates stood open and unobstructed, no longer guarded by the fear of what secrets might pull up uninvited.

Footsteps padded softly down the hallway, and Lily and Noah appeared in their pajamas, rubbing their eyes and smiling sleepily.

"Morning, Mom," Noah mumbled, stretching his arms up.

"Good morning, my loves," Evelyn said, walking over and pressing a gentle kiss to each of their foreheads. "Did you sleep well?"

"Better than ever," Lily replied, sitting down at the kitchen island. "Are we going to decorate cookies today?"

"We can do whatever you want today, Lily," Evelyn smiled warmly, pouring warm milk for their cocoa. "Absolutely whatever we want."

For years, Evelyn had believed her worth was tied to how well she could manage the chaos of a broken man's double life. Now, standing in her own kitchen with her children safe, her finances secure, and her future wide open, she realized the profound truth of her journey.

She hadn't just survived the collapse of Grant’s empire. She had outgrown it entirely.
