Chapter 20 - The Unbroken HorizonThe sun began to dip below the horizon, painting the winter sky in brilliant shades of amber, violet, and deep rose.

Evelyn stood on the back patio of her estate, wrapped in a heavy wool coat, looking out across the vast, snow-covered expanse of her backyard. The air was crisp and biting, filling her lungs with a clean, invigorating chill.
Inside the house, soft music played in the background, and the gentle murmur of her children’s voices drifted through the open kitchen door as they helped prepare a simple, homemade dinner. There was no pretense here. No hidden secrets, no ticking time bombs of deception, and no fear of a man who thought her silence meant weakness.
Her phone buzzed in her pocket. She pulled it out, seeing a notification alert from a legal news service: PRE-TRIAL HEARING SET FOR FORMER EXECUTIVE; PLEA BARGAIN REJECTED BY FEDERAL PROSECUTORS.
Evelyn didn't click the link. She didn't feel a shred of pity, nor a spike of anger. She simply turned the screen dark, walked to the patio railing, and dropped the phone back into her coat pocket.
Grant was a ghost from a past life she had successfully closed and locked away.

She took a deep, steady breath, looking out toward the unbroken horizon where the first evening stars were beginning to pierce the twilight sky. The life Grant had built on lies had crumbled into dust at her feet. But from those very ashes, Evelyn had forged something far stronger, far more radiant, and entirely her own.
She smiled into the winter wind, turned her back to the past, and walked back inside to her children.
