Chapter 2 - The Serpent in the Garden

Marco moved with terrifying efficiency. Within ten minutes, the dining room had transformed into an improvised command center. Laptops cast harsh blue light across the expensive damask wallpaper, and the low hum of encrypted satellite phones replaced the quiet elegance of the evening.
Sophia and her mother had been moved to a corner under the watchful eye of a guard, though Rocco had quietly instructed that they be treated with respect. The baby had finally stopped crying, lulled into an exhausted sleep against Sophia’s old sweater.
"Boss," Marco said, walking over with a tablet that displayed a jittery security feed. "We pulled the perimeter cameras from the rear service road. The rain scrambled the night-vision on sector four, but look at this timestamp. Exactly two hours and fourteen minutes ago."
Rocco leaned over the screen. A dark, hooded figure was seen slipping through the heavy iron service gate—a gate that required a biometric fingerprint exclusive to senior household staff and direct family members. The figure carried a bulky bundle, moving with an eerie, practiced familiarity through the labyrinth of the mansion's service corridors.
"They didn't break in," Rocco muttered, his eyes narrowing to lethal slits. "They live here."
"There's more," Marco continued, swiping to a second camera angle—the hallway leading directly from the master suite wing. "The figure didn't come from the outside courtyard. They came from the second-floor residential corridor, walked down the back service stairs, and dumped the child near the kitchen trash chute to make it look like an external abandonment."
Valentina sat rigidly in a high-backed leather chair, her hands folded tightly in her lap. "Are you implying one of us did this? A servant? Or perhaps you think I spent my evening wandering around service corridors in a wet cloak?"
"You didn't need to walk the corridors, Valentina," Rocco said slowly, turning around to face her. "You have people for that. Who has access to your private wing keys?"
"The staff! The maids, the security detail, the chefs!" she snapped, her composure finally fracturing into genuine anger. "Anyone could have stolen a keycard from my vanity while I was resting!"
"No one steals from your vanity without triggering the silent proximity sensors," Rocco replied softly. "You know that. The system logs every heartbeat within ten feet of your dressing room."
Before Valentina could retort, Marco’s phone buzzed aggressively. He looked at the screen, and his face hardened into a mask of professional dread.

"Boss. We decrypted the hospital logs tied to that registry number. The child... the child was registered under a dual-identity file. Born six hours ago. Mother listed as deceased due to complications. Father..." Marco hesitated, glancing nervously between Rocco and Valentina. "Father's identity was sealed under a high-level override. But the override signature belongs to your personal legal counsel, Lawrence Vance."
Every head in the room whipped toward Lawrence Vance, the senior attorney who had been sitting quietly at the edge of the table, sipping scotch.
